Life: June

June is flying by on the wings of change! If Patrick and I have disappeared from social media and the race scene and just been mysteriously quiet this year, it’s because we’ve been pouring a lot of time and energy into heart work. It’s like hard work but different, because it’s the work that your heart leads you into. The kind of work where you lose track of time as you embrace the flow. It looks like this:

Patrick’s last day at Bike Works was this past Thursday. On July 1st, he officially steps into a role tailor-made for him (seriously, the school created a position for him) as Athletic Director and PE teacher at Makua Lani Christian Academy. He’ll continue to coach cross-country and track as well… And who knows where else he’ll pop up at the school! Coaching there truly changed the trajectory of Patrick’s life and ignited a fire in him to make a career change. I’m SO very proud of him for having the courage to follow his heart!

Earlier this month, I submitted the last page of my first book - a coffee table book I was commissioned to write for the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel to celebrate its 60th anniversary! It should be available at the resort sometime in July. This book was definitely the most monumental project I’ve tackled. It meant dozens of trips to the resort for interviews and immersive experiences. It meant pouring over other books and digging through old articles in the resort’s archive room. Lots of research. Lots of weaving together old memories and new experiences and rewriting and rewriting until I felt I’d captured the essence of the oldest resort on Hawai’i Island. Several days where all I did was eat, sleep, and write to hit deadlines (thank you Patrick for cooking and cheering me on during the writing binges!). The project combined so many things that I love: Meeting new people and talking story, experiencing new places, research, and harnessing the power of the written word. I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

Also, we’re moving. That wasn’t planned! I’ll share more details when things get finalized. But for now, it’s a little bitter sweet. We love life in our “tiny house” but with more big projects being added to my schedule daily and Patrick’s new role at the school, it might be the perfect (albeit unplanned) time to move into an actual home where I’ll have a real office that isn’t also the kitchen table that is between the couch and the bed!

Stay tuned for more details on the move across town AND two articles I’m really excited about sharing once they get published!

Much aloha :) Sara & Patrick
